Gas Holder Remediation

I was updating our case studies today and found a fascinating job we did on a gas holder and tar tank.  The initial scope was to excavate contaminated soils in the rear garden of a residential property.  The first scrape of soil revealed a concrete surface, beneath it was this

Weeks later and following a site inspection by the client, material testing etc. we started extracting the tar.  That’s when the true extent of the issue became apparent, the tar tank was inside a former gas holder base, and both extended beneath the residential property.  Wow!  The builder obviously thought that a concrete slab was perfect for putting the foundations on.

I was almost as impressed with the remediation as I am with the homeowner staying in the house for the duration.
