Did you know that responsibility lies with you to ensure you look after your waste without harming the environment? I thought that the people who pick it up auotmatically took some of that responsibility which it turns out is only the case if the paperwork is bulletproof.
Follow these 3 simple steps to keep you right, make sure you-
- Store waste appropriately and securely. Think about the environment.
- Ensure your waste is handled by authorised &/or permitted people or businesses, and keep evidence.
- Complete waste transfer notes documenting all waste you transfer, make sure you include the appropriate European Waste Code (EWC), and keep the records for 2 years.
The thing to remember is that Waste Duty of Care is the responsibility of the waste producer, even if you know nothing about waste you need to look after yourself and ensure waste is handled correctly.
In a recent prosecution (2011) a waste transporter was fined for illegally dumping contaminated soils, if the producer hadn’t completed their waste duty of care and kept their paperwork in order they may have also been held responsible.
