The number of contaminated soil disposal sites in the UK is decreasing each year, in their place ‘soil treatment centres’ are springing up. The main reason for the change is the landfill tax escalator (read a blog on this here) which encourages people to use disposal as the last option for their soils.
The answer as always isn’t simple (otherwise I wouldn’t have a job). Firstly you need to classify your waste (great blog on that here) and then you need to find an outlet.
The simplest approach is to contact a waste broker, but I’ll assume you want to do this yourself which is why you’re browsing the internet.
- Approach as many ‘local’ landfill sites and treatment centres as possible – I say ‘local’ because haulage costs should be an essential part of your calculations.
- Supply them with your waste analysis / classification – The industry varies so much that sites can accept different waste depending upon their license .
- Put your costs together – consider your costs for loading, paperwork (waste transfer notes), haulage, disposal, and taxes.
That should give you an answer.
The plug for using a broker is that they know the industry and the locations of treatment centres, landfill sites with tax exemptions etc.. and will save you time and probably a lot of money, and the liability involved with your duty of care (another good blog on waste duty of care here).
