Contaminated Groundwater Remediation: In-Situ Treatments

Treating groundwater in-situ is a simple and effective way of getting rid of contamination with minimal disruption to the site.

There a 3 main techniques, all of which are best used to treat petrol, diesel, kerosene and many other organic contaminants:

Chemical Oxidation – The addition of a suitable oxidant which vastly accelerates the breakdown of the contaminant. Read more here. The choice of oxidants is ever increasing, from rapid acting fast burning oxidants, to slow release longer life oxidants.  The choice depends on your needs, access to the water and a few other important factors including cost of course.

Air Sparging – Pumping air through the impacted groundwater.  As simple as it sounds oxygen in the air can have several positive effects, for example- increasing the rate volatile contaminants ‘escape’ to the atmosphere, and/or allowing degrading bacteria to grow faster.

Bioremediation – Enhancing the groundwater conditions to enable faster breakdown by bacteria.  This can include adding nutrients to the water, balancing the pH, adding oxygen (as above), adding degrading bacteria etc…. we have plenty more on bioremediation, if you are interested then click here.

There are many solutions to contaminated groundwater issues, we find it simpler to discuss them on a case by case basis and in confidence, feel free to phone (0131 538 8456) or drop us an e-mail with any query.
