Does Heating Oil freeze?

I’m guessing that this isn’t a question you’ve asked yourself recently… but now maybe you’re intrigued and think that it may come up at the annual Christmas quiz and you don’t like passing up the opportunity to impress.   You may be thinking ‘of course heating oil freezes’, everything must freeze if the temperature is low enough.

Correct, the juice which keeps the boilers and Aga’s running where gas isn’t the fuel of choice, can freeze, it is just very unlikely unless you live where temperatures drop below -46oC for a significant length of time.  2 points of reference for you, the coldest recorded temperature in the UK was -27.2 oC * (Altnaharra, Northern Scotland) or, heating oil otherwise known as kerosene, less known as jet fuel, is carted around the sub-zero heights of the atmosphere by the gallon without freezing.

*correct at time of writing, although I’d expect it to be beaten in the next 3 months!
